I

don’t have a green thumb, never have. Flowers come to me in boxes that I pick up from the airport. Though I may not be able to tend a garden, I know how to make something beautiful with cut flowers that have already bloomed. I feel this is a perfect metaphor for life and love. My mentor and dear friend, David Beahm, taught me to appreciate the beauty as flowers grow, live, and finally wither away. Unlike a stem that is cut from the earth, love can bloom again and again through the seasons of life. In that same way, my time at the helm of Alabama Weddings has given me the opportunity to create beauty with our creatives who endure and bloom year after year.

In celebrating flora and fauna, I also wanted to explore the beauty of plants, flowers, animals, insects, and even the beautiful things that come from deep within the earth. Yes, it is all meant to make our pages beautiful, but also is a small way to appreciate what Mother Earth has given us. To see this brought to life, on page 74 we highlight the jewels and gems that are formed from great pressure to become something that can hold such deep meaning in our lives. I was fortunate to visit Florence, Italy in the summer of 2023. During my time exploring the city, I visited Gucci Gardens, a museum dedicated to showcasing the brand’s history and maximalist use of bizarre patterns, gender-neutral shapes, and bright colors. Modern Gucci fashion also is known for its use of flora and fauna prints and detailing such as snakes, bees, flowers, and tigers. We were already halffinished producing this issue, but it reiterated how traveling the world inspires me to bring bold things back to my home here in Alabama. I hope that in these pages, you will find inspiration for your wedding day that will create memories you carry for the rest of your life.

This year’s issue has been a joy to conceive and create; to dwell on themes of love and beauty surrounded by flowers and nature. It’s no secret that artists have long turned to nature for inspiration – just look at Monet’s Water Lilies series or Dutch Master Rembrandt’s work. Being masters of their craft, our creatives don’t have to stretch a canvas to revel in the beauty of flora and fauna. While most brides dream of a wedding full of flowers, this issue is not about the grand show of blooms, but about the aliveness of nature.

I grew up outdoors as a Boy Scout for more than ten years. I’ve camped and hiked across most of Alabama, most memorably Camp Comer in Mentone and Camp Sequoyah in Delta. Although I’ve become a city mouse through and through since then, I still remember to follow my North Star to lead me on my path. The Kirk family farm in Orrville was always bountiful with fresh vegetables that Pappy would plant and cultivate for the community and us, while also running R.W. Kirk & Son Feed & Seed. I could often be found hanging out with the cows and picking blueberries during our visits there. Since his passing, a portion of the brick-and-mortar business has been renovated into the flourishing Orrville Farmers Market, which also serves my favorite meat-and-three in the state. I am blessed to have grown up surrounded by the beauty of Alabama’s flora and fauna, and am honored to showcase it in this issue. I dedicate my work this year to the memory of Lance Lenoir, who served as the brilliant photo editor of this publication for many years and taught me much of what I know about photographic excellence. Never lose your Wonder. Sow good seeds.

David Kirk Art Director & Sr. Editor

This year has been so much fun to plan and create from conceptualization to print. As a team, we love to bring the state exciting, inspiring ideas and designs to use throughout the wedding and event industry. I cannot wait for each and everyone of you to flip through the pages of this issue and find what speaks to you. I hope you find lush flowers, a stunning tablescape statement piece, or even the spark you need to dream up your own design. I hope that a little bit of each of us in this book finds its way to you. Here’s to all the couples and the biggest day of your lives. I look forward to seeing all the photos from the upcoming weddings!

GARDEN and GUNN

Local skin and beauty expert, Dr. Holly Gunn, gives you the inside track to what makes her feel most beautiful. Q: What skin routine do you suggest for brides leading up to their wedding? A: “This is so dependent on each individual. I would recommend a skincare consultation by one of our aesthetic staff members or Dr. Gunn. All skincare routines should include a cleanser, a daily sunscreen, and a moisturizer. Skin type and age are factors we use to create customized skincare routines.” Q: What services do you offer that enhance someone’s natural beauty? A: “Natural beauty is seen when the skin looks healthy and youthful. We have numerous treatments to fight the signs of aging and to make the skin healthier. Our most-booked treatments are facials, neuromodulators like Botox, and natural fillers. We also have numerous lasers and skin-tightening treatments that make the skin stronger. We choose treatments based on the bride’s or mother-of-the-bride’s individual needs.”

I could not live without Necoutis Journee Firm Riche Cream, ISDIN Melatonik, or my Sothys Purity Cleansing Milk. I also have rosacea and love ZO Rozatrol specifically for that aspect of my skincare routine.” Q: What part of your day, outside of work, makes you feel better and more beautiful? A: “We are so lucky to work in a place like Gunn Dermatology that makes patients, family, and staff look and feel their best. Eating healthy, exercising, and spending time with friends and family are important things that you can do for yourself daily.”

Q: If someone is looking to book a consultation with you prior to the wedding day, how far out should this be planned? A: “Sometimes we have brides walk in a few weeks before the wedding, and we can still help them look their best. I prefer to have nine months before Q: What is part of your personal skincare the wedding in case we need a series routine that you love? of treatments and multiple modalities. A: “I love any product that actually Everyone needs a consultation to create works and makes the skin healthier–it’s a customized plan for their needs.” a bonus if they smell and feel good too!

WHERE THE FLOWERS GROW

Photo: Genevieve Photography: RyloTymrak Creative. Venue: Rockhurst Farm.

Dorothy McDaniel shares how generations of families are brought together by flowers from across the globe.

54 WEDDINGS PLANNING

Dorothy McDaniel’s Flower Market works with flowers from all over the world every week. They receive flowers directly from Holland that have been grown in the Netherlands, France, and Italy, as well as shipments from California. What may surprise you is that Dorothy’s favored summer peonies come from Homer, Alaska, courtesy of her friends at the Alaska Perfect Peony farm owned by Rita Jo Shoultz, as seen on the opposite page during Dorothy’s visit last year. “I have ordered peonies from Rita in the past, and she told me about the Homer Peony Celebration that features all 25 growers in town, which I was pleased to attend this past summer,” says McDaniel. “The peonies are magnificent and grown only in Alaska during July and August.

They need cold temperatures and lots of sun. When we were there, it was 50 degrees with 21 hours of sunlight – perfect growing conditions. They have a captive summer market.” “We get the preponderance of our roses from Ecuador and late fall peonies from Chile. More and more of our flowers are also coming from South America by way of Miami. Before leaving the farms, the flowers are cut and boxed, arriving at our destination within a day or so. From there, we cut each bunch of flowers and put them in buckets with flower food. Once they have hydrated, we put them in our cooler. Event flowers are left out to open to their maximum, so that they will be most optimum.” “Once the flowers are sorted for a wedding, we delegate the execution to a given designer; someone does arbors and large arrangements and someone else does bouquets. On the day of the event, drivers and floral stylists go to the venue and install the flowers. After the event we take our

props and all flowers from the venue. With the permission of the family, we reserve the flowers for Repurposed Blooms, which picks them up on Monday and takes them to hospice patients around the city.” “My friends, Tula and Alex Grammas, were lifelong friends, as were our parents and grandparents. I was commissioned to do the weddings of their three daughters, and this past year I did the wedding of their respective daughters as well. Alex was a very accomplished baseball player with the Cardinals, Redlegs, and Cubs prior to being inducted to the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame. All the brides were married at the Holy Trinity - Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Birmingham. They all wanted white flowers, but each with a different floral variety and execution. It is truly an honor to be trusted to provide the wedding flowers for multiple generations of families.” ”My advice for planning your flowers is to know what you want. Look at magazines such as Alabama Weddings to garner what you like. We often have young ladies who are engaged come by our store and ask to look at flowers. Seeing a peony or a ranunculus in a photo is different than seeing it in person. Also, have an initial consultation with vendors and choose someone with whom you are comfortable. We can do anything given an appropriate budget, but we cannot deliver the perfect wedding if you don’t know what you want. We can guide you and show you all the possibilities. Ultimately, it is your wedding, and our goal is to make it beautiful and memorable for every generation to adore.”

ARTFUL AFFAIR Among well-curated collections, you can create your own masterpiece.

Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts is the oldest fine arts museum in Alabama, and its lakefront setting and idyllic grounds make it a perfect wedding venue for arts-loving couples. Senior Curator Margaret Lynne Ausfeld, tells us why. Q: What different areas of the museum are available for use during weddings? A: “The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts offers incredible spaces to make all of your ceremony, reception, and after-party dreams a reality. Begin your event with a lakeside wedding ceremony on the Parker Terrace at sunset. Then move to the picturesque three-acre Caddell Sculpture Garden for cocktails. Enjoy dinner in the Lowder Gallery, surrounded by world-class contemporary art. Finish the evening by dancing under the soaring height of the Rotunda – my favorite spot in the museum. Recently, a couple wed in front of the bride’s favorite work from her childhood, John Signer Sargent’s Mrs. Louis E. Raphael (Henriette Goldschmidt). Q: What is your advice to Southern couples as they select their venue? A: “We advise couples looking for a venue for their wedding to think through the whole picture. Consider your guests and ask yourself a few questions: Will this venue be easily accessible for family members with mobility issues? Is there adequate parking? Suppose you plan to have a part or all of your event outdoors – does the venue have space indoors to accommodate everything in inclement weather? Lastly, and importantly, I recommend that all couples find an event coordinator they enjoy working with because you will spend a lot of time with them!”

WORKING TOGETHER Owner Cristina Cadden shares the story of restoring The 1616 House. Photography by Twenty Oaks Photography

In early 2019, my husband, Spencer, and I stumbled upon The 1616 House while on a quest to acquire a property in the Southeast. Our primary objective was to establish a luxurious wedding venue that would exude the charm of French elegance, offer ample interior space, and create a refined ambiance. Having previously operated a wedding furniture rental company in San Diego, we desired a more permanent location to host meticulously curated weddings and events, eliminating the need to transport our inventory to venues. As only the third owners in 108 years, we consider ourselves fortunate to have forged connections with the previous owners and the local community. This has allowed us to immerse ourselves in the mansion’s rich history, through a treasure trove of photographs showcasing its evolution over the years. Upon acquiring the property in October 2019, we embarked on a mission to restore the mansion to its original grandeur after it had been unoccupied for numerous years. Our goal was to preserve its historical charm and make it available to others as a venue where they can celebrate their most cherished and significant occasions. Since opening in the spring of 2021, we feel very fortunate to be fulfilling our dream of bringing this historical property back to life and having the opportunity to share this architectural gem with others. The restoration work of The 1616 House was projected to take two years of intensive, all-day restoration work with a five-year overall projection to complete the entire restoration. We began this project in February of 2020, but the pandemic ended

58 WEDDING PLANNING

up forcing Spencer and I to have to complete much of the restoration process ourselves. Our first major task was restoring the 165-double-hung window sashes that took roughly a year to complete. We had to remove every sash out of the frame, remove the paint down to the bare wood, reglaze the panes, repaint each sash, source antique glass for repairs, and re-hang each one by hand. There are still a few that we have left to complete, but overall, that was a portion of the restoration that we are very proud to have completed ourselves. Our local community has been an incredible pillar of support for us from the very beginning of the restoration journey. Their unwavering encouragement throughout the years has played a pivotal role in sustaining our determination during challenging times. They have expressed their gratitude repeatedly, emphasizing how thankful they are for our efforts in rescuing this property from further

disrepair, and for our wholehearted commitment. We also live right next door in the house originally constructed by the Pelzer family in 1902 to witness their dream house come to life. For the first time in many years, this corner of South Perry Street has regained its vibrancy, and our community members have conveyed how significant and positive this transformation has been.

A GRAND PORTRAIT Elevated experience meets artful inspiration in Mountain Brook.

From serene settings for your bridal portraits to outstanding spreads for the reception, the Grand Bohemian Mountain Brook, Autograph Collection has it all. Director of Sales & Catering Angela Howell tells us more. Q: How would you best describe the property to potential couples? A: “The Grand Bohemian is a botanicalinspired boutique venue where your dream wedding comes to life either in the heart of nature’s elegance or in the grand ballroom with crystal and gold, ornamental chandeliers. Nestled in the lush embrace of Mountain Brook, our venue offers the perfect canvas for your special day.” Q: What on-site catering options does the Grand Bohemian offer? A: “Our talented chef will work to create your personalized experience: a gourmet plated dinner with multiple courses, family-style dining with farmto-table options, a grand buffet with a variety of delectable options, or food stations where guests can savor freshly prepared dishes tailored to their liking. We also offer cocktail receptions with a selection of hors d’oeuvres accompanied by a well-curated bar featuring signature cocktails chosen by the bride and groom.” Q: What advice do you have for couples looking to book their venue? A: “Create a budget, define your priorities, and research early because popular venues book quickly. Make time to visit several venues while considering the location and nearby hotel accommodations. Consider a Friday or Sunday afternoon wedding because many venues offer varying rates on these days as well.”

The Couple's Story “Von proposed to me the night before we left for a trip to the UK. While we were there, wedding planning was obviously heavy on my mind. I always thought that I wanted all-white florals with greenery for my wedding – simple and classic. We walked around Notting Hill, my favorite neighborhood in London, which is the most charming and vibrant place, sprawling with beautiful flowers and colorful townhomes. This is what really inspired the design for our wedding. I wanted it to be an English garden party meets a disco fairy dreamland, and I think that’s what we achieved. Take inspiration from everywhere and don’t be afraid to do something different or out of your usual comfort zone.” – Mallory

Advice From the Bride

“I know it’s hard, but try to plan your wedding with the mindset of how you can make the day reflect the two of you the most. Try not to plan a wedding with the mindset of trying to impress everyone else and make everyone else have a good time. What details about your wedding will make the two of you have the best time on your special day? This is a great time in life to be selfish. Think more about yourselves and the love you share and how you want to celebrate that and less about others. The guests will be happy as long as they see how much the two of you love each other.” – Carrie

The Couple’s Story

“A true centerpiece to our love story is how much we are both sports fanatics, which is important in a state like Alabama. Clay is an Alabama fan while I am for Auburn. When we were friends, we always told each other that we could never marry each other because football season would be too hard. Luckily, we can put that aside during the season (except for the Iron Bowl) and still have fun, but we still always throw in a quick remark. We are a true testament that you can still fall in love with somebody who cheers for, ‘that other school!’” – Niki

How They Met

“Our families had known each other for years before Wind and I crossed paths in December of 2020. I had temporarily moved back to my parent’s home in North Alabama while working remotely. My parents and I attended the same church as Wind and his family. My mention to my parents that I had never actually met Wind was somehow communicated to him as, ‘Tori wants to meet you.’ Wind made his move and we began dating. We were on a weekend trip to Blackberry Farm with his parents in February 2022 when Wind proposed. My parents surprised us there as well – it was such a special weekend with our families and one we will cherish forever.” – Tori

Advice From the Bride

“I recommend having a private dinner together right after the ceremony. It was our only time spent together the entire day until after the wedding was over. Advice From the Couple “We are so happy with our wedding for many reasons, but one of the reasons is that we did not follow a script for what our wedding should look like. Advice From the Couple “On your wedding day, give your phone to your matron of honor or best man. This way you are fully present and able to take in the moment to fully enjoy your day without any unnecessary distractions. How They Met

“I met Bryce in my very first week on campus at Clemson University where I cheered and he played baseball. One of my teammates was dating a baseball player and introduced me to some of the team. Being from Alabama, I didn’t know anyone, so I was super excited to meet people. Little did I know, I was meeting my husband! We quickly became great friends and eventually started dating. At the beginning of our sophomore year, I knew I had found my person. He proposed to me after one of his minor league baseball games in Huntsville by a beautiful pond where he frequently went fishing on his off-days during the season. It was truly the most thoughtful and intimate proposal. Our entire families were there to celebrate with us afterwards. It was the perfect night.” – Brooklyn

The Couple's Story “For as long as either of us can remember, we’ve used thumb wars to settle who decides on dinner or what we’re going to do for the day. When we were planning our wedding, we decided that instead of a traditional unity symbol we would have a thumb war in the middle of our ceremony. Advice from the Couple

“Our advice is to get a wedding planner. My mom and I are very creative and the best of friends, so at first, we thought we could do this all by ourselves; but, after talking to several people, we quickly made the decision to hire a planner. When it comes to weddings, there is so much you truly do not know and so much stress; but, when hiring a planner, they will do everything for you and take all the stress off your family and your future husband.” – Logan

The Couple’s Story

“We met in May 2021 at a charity golf tournament where my real estate brokerage was sponsoring one of the holes. I always thought he was a handsome man, but I didn’t pick up on his personality that day during our brief chat. When we saw each other a month later at a football clinic in which my two sons were enrolled, I approached him with a confession. I told him that I had dreamed that we were riding around downtown in a black truck listening to music while it was raining. I immediately felt embarrassed after blurting out my dream to a public figure I barely knew. Despite the initial awkwardness, the conversation felt good, and we exchanged phone numbers. We began to text, and had our first date on July 1, 2021, at Paper Doll in downtown Birmingham. We’ve been attached ever since.” – Kendra

“One does want a hint of color.” - Albert Goldman, The Birdcage

As The Flora & Fauna Issue comes to a close, I feel a deeper connection to the earth. Just as diamonds form with time and pressure, we too show great resilience when met with life’s challenges. This year has proven to be a beautiful season of growth for me. While I’ve experienced the pressures of growth, there is no way this issue would have bloomed without my team. I am forever grateful. I hope you found vibrant inspiration in these pages that will color your world. And now, as I turn and look forward to the bright year ahead, I am bursting with excitement to prepare for you Alabama Weddings 2025: The Color Issue. x, C
