The Mitha Mu Ceremony
“A mitha mu is a traditional pre-wedding ceremony in South Asian Muslim cultures that formally marks the families’ agreement to the marriage. The name means “sweet mouth,” symbolizing the sharing of good news and the sweetness of the relationship ahead. During the ceremony, families exchange sweets, gifts and sometimes rings, and offer prayers or duas for blessings. In some families, this also includes a “doodh pilai” ritual, in which the couple drinks milk together from the same cup to symbolize purity, unity and the beginning of their life together. Overall, it is an intimate, joyful gathering that celebrates the joining of two families and the intention to move forward toward the engagement and wedding.” – Soha
